Back in work
Oh the joy. I was hoping to spend my day reading my backlog of emails but my account has been locked, bugger. Need to find something else to do to pass the time. Work perhaps? Ha!

Last post on board
Sat in coffee bar using up the last of our online credit. Sea has calmed now so hopefully get some sleep tonight.
Burger sucking woman was sucking on a pizza today. Just not right at all.
Up early tomorrow but it shouldn't be too bad as we are still an hour in front so we get an hour back tonight. Then it's breakfast and off the ship into sunny Southampton. Hopefully.

Last day
Thursday - 17 September - At very rough sea
Apparantly the sea conditions are slight, pull the other one! Didn't get much sleep last night with all the rockin and a rollin. Carried on into today which is also overcast and cold. We can certainly tell we are nearly home. Ah well. We should be accross the Bay of Biscay soon so hopefully the sea conditions will improve.
Highlight of yesterday was watching a woman suck a burger. Not chew it. Suck it, as she had no teeth. Michelle found it very mesmerising.
A close second was a bloke sat near the pool wondering why he was getting wet now and again. Over and over. Try looking at the pool pal, as the boat is rocking and it's windy spray occurs. Pfft.

Another chunk of text
Monday – 14th September – at sea
Weather about the same but we went and sunbathed anyway, got a few hours in before retiring to complete our cruise questionnaire. A tricky one as the ship and staff have been excellent, it’s just the other people on board that have annoyed. I think if we go on a ship like this again it was have to be during school holidays to get some people nearer our age bracket on board!
Tuesday – 15th September – Malaga
Not so good weather wise, which wasn’t a bad thing. Nice and cool start to the morning as we drove from Malaga to Granada. By the time we got to Alhambra it was nice and warm but not too hot. Spent two hours going around the place, could have spent more as it was lovely. I wouldn’t have minded living there in days gone by! All very calm and peaceful, bar the tourists.
We hoped on the coach to go to the hotel for a Spanish buffet. Very nice it was, bar the massive dish of paella with king prawns staring at me. Urgh. We ended up sitting with one of the tour guides, alas she wouldn’t be drawn too much on my question about incidents this cruise on the tours. Very professional of her, damn.
Hopped on the coach for the ride back to Malaga and the heavens opened. Then stopped. Then opened. Then stopped. Etc. Not like the real rain we back home. Turns out it had thrown it down back in the port, sunbeds empty but the sun was out drying them off. As we left port we sat at the back of the boat with a drink to watch Malaga disappear, as we did the water from the deck above cascaded down the steps at the side, was like a waterfall!
Wednesday – 16th September – At sea, on the way home
Ah well. On the homeward leg now, the sun is out, the sea is a rockin but its ok, we are used to it now. Until the Bay of Biscay kills us. Not sure I fancy one of the Caribbean cruises, crossing the whole of the Atlantic would probably be a rough ride. The wind is cold though, so very cold, so not many sun bathing.

Some more waffle
Thursday – 10th September – Dubrovnik
So England win in style and I never got to see it. Pfft. Nevermind.
Dubrovnik is a very nice place, only scratched the surface and might have to come back. Oldies are really starting to annoy on the tours now, just soooo slow! Getting off the coach takes an age, getting off the bloody boat takes ages. We keep ending up at the back of the group and the guide is off around the corner before we get out of the room we were in.
Flashing back to Pompei there was a woman who turned up at the coach in a wheelchair and then had a walking stick to walk around Pompei. A 2000 year old city. She didn’t last long. Basically the walk up the entrance, what a waste of her money. Why do they book on these tours? Crazy!
Friday – 11th September – Corfu
Ah, memories from years gone by. Still a lovely island, visited a few spots and had a Greek lunch. Ridiculous amount of food, lovely. As usual the older contingency where whinging to themselves about climbing steps etc, I’ll just pass comment by saying that the tour description tells you what is involved, even down to the number of steps.
One bloke had a turn at the end and fell, hurt his hip so we had to wait for a while on the coach until it was decided an ambulance would have to come and get him, he couldn’t walk up the coach steps.
Real eye opened this cruise, I really don’t want to get old!!!
Saturday – 12th September – Cefalonia
Lovely lovely island. The tour guide was a Brit who moved their 6 years ago, not sure why he has stayed, real Victor Meldrew (yes, worse than me) and he was so politically incorrect with his comments it was great!! Though he did upset two scots on the tour. Which was great!
The island itself is full of twisting winding roads with some stunning views of the sea, especially seeing the white effect of the limestone washing into the sea. Would like to come back and have a really lazy holiday here, looks really peaceful. Not so much whinging on this one from the old folks.
Managed to watch the football as well, good banter with spurs fans in the bar. And there is something infinitely better when watching football in a pub when people serve you drinks rather than having to go to the bar!
Sunday – 13th September – at sea
I look out the window and see clouds. Meh. The sea is calm and hopefully it will clear up later. , wanted to post this from the coffee shop but it seems if there is a cloud in the sky everyone goes there so we are in the pub again. Looking forward to a couple of relaxing days to recover from all the trips. Then we hit Malaga for our final port.

Hard work
Sending this as I struggle in the stiffling Croatian heat by the
endless pool. A few clouds coming towards us, hopefully it will ease
our hard work. Funny, no mention of football by the locals! Typical
though, if I had the chance to watch it it would have been a boring
1-0. Time to plan time off next year!

Another big update
Monday – 7th September – Rome
Ah, the centre of the Catholics religion. I shall try and keep this serious.
A loooong day, up a 6am back at 6pm. Religion aside Rome is quite simply stunning to look at. The architecture is amazing; there is no other way to put it really. We did a slightly different tour compared to last year and got to see inside the coliseum and, most importantly, inside the Vatican Museum. It was a long slog around the city, the escort was utterly mental and the guide was giving us waaaay to much information for one day which made for a great tour. The food at dinner was average, which was a shame. I personally was disappointed with the Vatican museum, especially the Sistine Chapel (what about the other 15? Arf). It was just a big hall with some paintings on the wall, I don’t get it. Religious types probably will. Highlight for me was yet again St Peters Basilica, it’s just ridiculously huge, you can’t compare it to anything else, completely mental and amazing to be inside. Then it was back to the ship for drinks and sleep.
Tuesday – 8th September – Naples
The tour today was another long one, but not in Naples. It was Sorrento and Pompei. Drove through Naples and to be honest it looked a bit of mess, not very inviting. Drove past Mount Vesuvius, really want to go up to the top, next time maybe.
Sorrento is very nice, lots of small streets and shops and that’s about it really. Lunch here was really nice. Pompei, with the right imagination is fantastic. The guide was great and really gave a good impression of how life was like there 2000 years ago. I found it quite mad that they put small pieces of limestone in between the road slabs as they reflected the moon light so people could see better. 2000 year old catseyes. Just seeing the ruins and imaging how they lived was a treat. Sewage systems, drainage systems, spas, saunas, jacuzzis, all 2000 years ago. Makes Oldham look old fashioned.
At this stage I would like to pass a judgement on the ship. It could be the time of year but it doesn’t seem to handle the sea very well. I am typing this as we cruise through the med to Dubrovnik and there is no swell or wind yet we still feel a rumble now and then like a big wave has hit the ship. We never had this last year on the Sea Princess. Also the promenade deck is quite narrow so you have to squeeze past people, which on a ship this size just doesn’t sit right. It has it’s good points too, wifi in all public areas, loads of bars and food choice. Interactive TV in the rooms so you can see each restaurant’s menu for the night, check the weather conditions, see videos of tours etc. At the moment the ships are on equal footing, we will pass final judgement at the end.
Oh and ‘lame claim to fame’. Claire Sweeny is onboard and we were sat next to her as we sailed out of Naples. Apparently she has been on TV? But then, who hasn’t? She is doing a show tonight, not sure I could stomach a scouser singing :p
Wednesday – 9th September – at sea
Sailing to Dubrovnik and boy is it depressing. No bloody sun. Just cloud as far as the eye can see, hence why I posted this update. Still, the time will fly by as we wander the ship and slowly get drunk.

Big post to cover a few days
Friday – 4th September
Cadiz
Well, not Cadiz, so 2008 that place, instead we went to Seville on an organised trip. As already posted we forgot our Euros and it was too late to get back on board to get them before the coach left. Bugger. So off we set with no money!
Quite a long drive, 2 hours including a pit stop for the old fogies (quite a lot on this cruise, it’s bordering on an old folks home to be honest). We drove around Seville a bit were the women repeatedly pointed out their Expos of 1929 and 1992, if you can only remember one juts swap the last two numbers around! Naff all left to show for 92 but some old buildings for the 29 one, some quite hideous.
We then stopped the square, half of which was being renovated. Then to a church which was a big building made of stone with some stain glass windows. You have probably been in one at some point. Quite big, the guy tried to make it sound impressive but alas we have been to Rome (and will be there again in a few days!) so to be impressive it would have to have been a LOT bigger. Then we went around Santa Cruz which is basically the old town with the narrow streets and tapas bars. After that it was free time which for us was basically wandering around for an hour till we could get back on the coach!!
4 coaches took P&O passengers, one of them had broken air con on the way back. At which point it was 41c in Seville. The coach temp allegedly hit 60c. So a few squeezed on our coach and another coach had to be brought in. This meant a 30 min delay to sail off time, not that we cared because we were back on board drinking.
The night was spent in one of the pool areas getting wasted on a variety of cocktails. We even had entertainment as the kids club had the pool for an hour or so to play games, which we found out as we were drinking our second cocktail and they all appeared from nowhere. Well, I say games, it was barely organised chaos, but funny to watch while getting drunk. Bizarely we felt as though we belonged in the same age bracket. Which gives an idea of the average age on board...
As we spent the night, to our port side was Europe and to our starboard side was Africa. Name the place.
Saturday – 5th September
Sea day today as we head for Corsica. Very windy but sea was smooth ish. Spent a few hours on the sun deck but eventually the wind became too much. So we went in the pool and then a Jacuzzi for a bit. Which was nice. Spoke to an old lady, married for 50 years. Sweet Mary Baby Jesus. Then had some lunch and retired to the balcony for a bit. Then to the shops to buy perfume (women!) then a few drinks. 2nd formal night tonight, suppose it’s nice to get dressed up, just means Michelle takes longer to get ready.
Had some tapas for tea and then a few drinks. Alas most of the night was spoiled by some quite ridiculous sea conditions. As far as I could see the swell didn’t look bad and there wasn’t much wind but christ was it rocking all over. Didn’t get much sleep, bit hard when the ship was being thudded over and over by what seemed like tidal waves in the middle of the night.
Sunday – 6th September – Corsica
After eventually dozing off early this morning we awoke at around 9ish as we docked in Ajaccio. We got some breakfast and slowly got ready, our tour started at 12. We hopped on the coach for the 90 minute winding journey to the Les Calanques, i.e. big fook off red rocky hill/mountain with some breathtaking views. Hopefully my real camera pictures do it justice. My Nan would have loved the ride. Lots of twisty roads with vertical drops on either side, didn’t bother us as the views along the way were wonderful. Corsica really is a beautiful island and we thought about coming back. Until the tour guide gave us some history and said the nationalist party still bomb building that are part of the French government. Hmm. Still, they try and make sure they don’t kill anyone, which is nice. I suppose.

Inside the Colloseum
Seems my iPhones accelerometers are up the spout. Tilting left doesn't send the camera into landscape mode. Slight tilting right does (and in every other bloody app, then it won't go back). So with this picture you don't have to tilt your head. Huzzah!!

Time for a bit of a bit of a text update rather than just pics.
Tuesday – 1st September
Got to Southampton with plenty of time to spare. Only had one near miss on the motorway which is good going for Joanne :)
Boarded the boat and proceeded to the room to dump bags and then to the bar. Did a bit of exploring to get our bearings and then went for some lunch. Bit of a fret over the luggage. Took a long time to turn up and when it did we were missing one bag. Asked at reception and they said not to worry it will turn up soon. And it did. Phew. Had all the shoes and chargers in it, would have been a disaster! Formal night wearing trainers!
Weather was not so good. Once out of the Solent it started getting rocky, enough to put me off my food, which is saying something! Shell was fine and I was better after some pills. The bad weather continued throughout the night.
Wednesday – 2nd September
Bad weather continued today, really choppy crossing the Bay of Biscay and the gale force winds and rain put paid to any ideas of being outside. The British Summer just does not want to let go. Shell felt it today so we were both on the pills. Didn’t help Shell much as she was the one with food problems in the evening. Had a few drinks and called it a night.
Thursday – 3rd September
This is more like it! Not a cloud in sight and a gentle breeze, glorious! Seems we passed the sign marked ‘Med Summer this way’ overnight (not looking forward to going back and passing the ‘Rubbish British weather this way’ sign on the way back). Spent most of the day on deck, then grabbed some lunch, had a couple of drinks and chilled on the balcony soaking up more sun.
Two of the pools out of action today, seems they are doing some maintenance while we are onboard. Not sure why they couldn’t do that while we were docked in Southampton or even tomorrow while people are onshore in Cadiz.

Not the best start to our first day ashore. Forgot the bloody money!!!
Too late now, on way to Seville!
